Luton Airport Information
Luton airport saw over 7.5 million passengers come and go through its gates
during 2004 and has great transport links by road and rail (25 minutes
from London ). There is a small distance between departures and the
gates leaving time to sample the shops and restaurants.
The airport was officially opened on 16 July 1938 as Luton Municipal Airport by the Right Honourable Kingsley Wood, Secretary of State for Air. The airport was owned by the Borough of Luton and, even in those early days, it was considered that Luton should be designated the northern terminal for London. Between 1992 and 1996, £30 million was invested in the airport infrastructure which resulted in a considerable upgrading of facilities. In 1999 the terminal was redeveloped to house 60 check-in desks and modern flight information and baggage systems.
London Luton provides long term parking for 9,500 cars, within minutes of the terminal building. For disabled passengers there is an area adjacent to the terminal entrance where they can be dropped off, (the drivers then may proceed to the car parking areas), there are regular buses that will transport you back to the terminal.
