Stansted is a medium-sized passenger airport with a single runway, situated in Essex about 30 miles north of London, and is owned and operated by BAA plc. It is London's 3rd busiest after Heathrow and Gatwick.

The airport is named after the Stansted mountfitchet (a small village 30 miles outside of London).
The airport was originally constructed in 1942 by the United States army, as a base for bombers and in 1947 was transferred to the air ministry and then to BAA in 1966, in 1986 construction began on upgrading the complex to host upto 15 million passengers per year that was completed in 1991.
In 2004, the number of passengers using Stansted rose to 20.9 million. In a comparison, traffic at Heathrow rose to 67.1 million passengers, and Gatwick was up to 31.4 million.
